A masterpiece of deep-sea sci-fi from 1989. A U.S. Navy nuclear submarine mysteriously runs aground near an offshore oil rig. A rescue crew, along with U.S. special forces, begins searching the submarine. The search continues amidst numerous difficulties, including a hurricane, conflicts with soldiers, and equipment malfunctions. Then, the existence of an unknown life form emerges.
Ed Harris, of "Apollo 13" fame, stars and delivers a brilliant performance. The film is directed by James Cameron, who has brought numerous blockbusters to the world, including "Titanic." Even now, after the passage of time since its theatrical release, the special effects technology is superb, and the impact is breathtaking.
The film makes you keenly aware that the deep sea is a world unknown to humanity, just like space, or perhaps even more so, and is a source of wonder. Winner of the 1989 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Furthermore, additional footage is included in the special edition.
